Does ozone work when I am in the hot tub?
Ozone continues to work as a sanitiser while you are in the hot tub, but its effectiveness is mostly behind the scenes.
Here’s how it works in practice:
Continuous Sanitisation:
Ozone systems are typically designed to run continuously or at regular intervals.
This means that as long as the ozone generator is operating, ozone is being injected into the water to help sanitise it.
Oxidising Organics:
While you're in the hot tub, ozone helps to break down organic materials such as body oils, lotions, and other contaminants that wash off into the water.
No Direct Contact:
Generally, the ozone gas is injected into the plumbing system of the hot tub and has minimal direct contact with you.
This setup helps ensure that ozone can do its job of sanitising the water effectively while minimising exposure to bathers.
Safety and Effectiveness:
Ozone breaks down quickly back into oxygen, so by the time the treated water reaches the main bathing area, the levels of ozone are usually very low and safe for humans.
However, because ozone has no residual effect, maintaining a base level of a compatible sanitiser like chlorine or bromine is important to ensure continuous protection.
Balancing with Chemicals:
Since ozone doesn’t leave a residual disinfectant in the water, it should be viewed as part of a multi-barrier approach to water care.
While it reduces the amount of chemical sanitisers needed, it cannot replace them entirely.
Proper maintenance and monitoring of the hot tub's chemical balance ensure optimal safety and comfort for users while the ozone system enhances overall water quality.
