The 15th March 2019 is globally recognised as World Sleep Day – sounds like a dream come true for people who love nothing more than being tucked up by 9pm and lazing around on a Sunday – but World Sleep Day actually has a much more important message about raising awareness on the importance of getting good quality sleep.

1. Try to go to bed at the same time every night: we get it, weekends are for sleeping in, right? Actually, that may be working against you when it comes to getting good quality sleep. Studies have shown that by going to sleep at the same time every night, you fall asleep faster, and have improved cognitive performance during the day.
2. Avoid stimulants late in the day: I know that if I have even a caffeinated cola too late in the day, I’ll be tossing and turning until 3 in the morning. While you may not be as sensitive as that, it’s certainly a good idea to avoid caffeine, nicotine or alcohol late in the day to ensure a good night of undisturbed kip.
3. Make your sleeping area comfortable: that’s right, it may be time to throw that old lumpy mattress you’ve had for 15 years! Make sure you have enough pillows, so your neck is comfortable; you have enough blankets so you’re not too warm or cold, if the room is light try a sleeping mask, and if it is too noisy try ear plugs or a white noise machine.
4. Avoid using your bedroom for anything other than sleep: If you’re anything like me, I love working on my bed – why wouldn’t I want to be comfortable while working hard?! It turns out that this may be harming your chances of a good night’s sleep. By doing activities other than sleeping, your brain may associate your bed as a place where your brain needs to be engaged and working, instead of a place for winding down.
5. Create a bedtime routine: Spend an hour reading, take a relaxing bath, listen to some soothing music or adopt a skincare routine to prepare yourself for sleep. By getting into a routine, you allow your body and mind time to relax before getting into bed.
